Life is a journey filled with countless choices—some we celebrate, others we might wish we could undo. But each decision, even those we consider mistakes, has been a step on the path that led to the person we are today. When we understand this, we see there are no wrong choices, only experiences that guide us toward becoming our true selves.
Romans 8:28 reassures us, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Even the choices we might regret are used by God to shape us, refining us like a potter shaping clay, into the person He intends us to be. God’s hand is in each moment, even when we can’t see it.
I’ve made mistakes—some small and almost unnoticed, and others that felt life-altering. Some choices filled me with regret and shame, and others required deep self-forgiveness.
I remember a time when a memory from the past surfaced, and I was overwhelmed with guilt, wishing I could go back and make a different choice. In that moment, I realized that if I changed the past, I would also change the future, including the person I am today.
Imagine erasing every “mistake,” every hard lesson. Who would we be without those experiences, without the strength, wisdom, and resilience that came from them? It’s our trials, our missteps, and our moments of growth that shape us. They bring depth, insight, and understanding. Each challenge, each struggle, has left a mark on us, molding us into the people we are meant to be.
If I erased even a handful of those moments, the "me" I am today would be different. I would not have learned the powerful life lessons that have equipped me to face challenges and to offer guidance to others who may be walking a similar path. In God’s eyes, these moments are not wasted. They’re part of His perfect design, and they equip us to fulfill our purpose.
Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” It’s a reminder that even when our choices seem unclear or we doubt our direction, God is guiding us. His plan is often different from what we might envision, but it is always good.
Looking back with regret or dwelling on the "what-ifs" can rob us of the beauty of the present. God knew every step we would take long before we ever took it. Psalm 139:16 says, “Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” Every part of our journey has been woven into a tapestry only He can see fully, and in His perfect timing, it all fits together.
When we embrace the idea that life gets better when we stop seeing decisions as right or wrong, we find peace in knowing that each choice—whether it led to triumph or trial—was necessary for our growth. Imagine looking back and seeing each experience not as a mistake but as a lesson that brought you closer to God’s purpose. Instead of seeing broken pieces, we can choose to see a masterpiece in progress.
God invites us to trust that He is at work, even in the messy parts of our story. When we surrender the need to fix our past or second-guess our choices, we give ourselves the freedom to live fully in the present. And we open ourselves to the beauty of God’s unfolding plan. Our journey, with all its twists, turns, and imperfections, is part of His divine plan.
So, embrace your journey—the highs and the lows, the moments of joy and the moments of struggle. Trust that each step you’ve taken has brought you closer to becoming the person you were always meant to be. And remember, if you went back and fixed all the “mistakes” you think you made, you’d erase the very experiences that helped shape your heart, character, and faith.
Your journey, with all its imperfections, is perfect in God’s eyes. Embrace it, knowing that every choice, every moment, every experience, has purpose. Life’s journey may not always look as we imagined, but it is beautifully crafted by the One who knows us best. Rest in that assurance, let go of regret, and move forward with confidence that you are right where you are meant to be.
