Powering Up God’s Light in Our Lives

In South Africa, load-shedding has become a part of daily life.

I still remember when it first started, we were so unprepared, fumbling in the dark for candles and unsure of what to do. Over time, we adapted. We put together boxes of essentials like candles, matches, torches, and power banks. Some even installed backup systems to ensure their homes stayed lit during the outages.

We recently had a power outage that left us with no power for 18 hours.  Our back up power supply died on the 7th hour, and it was starting to get dark.

I remember feeling completely out of control, worried and a little anxious.

This need for physical light brought to mind an even greater need,

God’s light in our lives.

The same urgency we feel in preparing for load-shedding should apply to keeping God’s light burning brightly within us. Just as we refuse to sit in the dark without a plan, we shouldn’t allow our spiritual lives to be consumed by darkness.

We need to create our own "spiritual essentials box," filled with prayer, reading the Word, worship, fellowship with other believers, and acts of service.

Psalm 119:105 reminds us, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” These are the tools that will help us stay spiritually charged and connected to the light of Christ.

Just as backup power systems are only effective when they’re fully charged,

we must stay connected to God, the ultimate source of light.

Jesus said in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

Staying connected to God ensures that His light shines consistently,

even when life feels overwhelming.

And just like a single candle can illuminate an entire room in physical darkness,

the light of Christ in us has the power to inspire hope and bring life to others.

Matthew 5:16 encourages us, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Your light can lead others to Him through kind words, acts of service,

and sharing your faith.

Life often feels full of "load-shedding moments", times when fear, doubt, or struggle threaten to plunge us into spiritual darkness.

But God’s light never dims, and His power is always available.

Isaiah 60:1 encourages us,

“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.”

As you prepare your home for the next power outage, let it serve as a reminder to also power up spiritually. Don’t let the darkness of this world catch you unprepared.

Seek God’s light with urgency, stay connected to Him daily,

and let His radiance shine through you.

The light of God is your constant power supply reliable, unchanging, and life-giving.

Keep it shining!
